Legacy of: Marion Hostetter nee Leedom
from South Bend, Indiana
born 1903 in PA

Marian's Banana Jumbo Cookies
1 cup shortening (Left over bacon drippings will do)
1 cup white sugar (Soften it by using a hammer)
2 eggs (Slightly old but not smelly)
1 cup mashed banana's (Get them before the monkey's bite the ends off)
1/2 cup buttermilk or sour milk (Best if taken from a cow that's almost dried up)
3 cups flower (Be sure to pick out the weevils)
1/2 tsp. salt (Rock salt will do if that is all you have)
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda (Bake the soda first, or the cookies won't rise)
1 tablespoon vanilla (Pull the vanilla bean from the jar and cut off a chunk)
1 cup chopped nuts (Get the drippings from underneath the hazelnut tree in the back yard that the squirrel’s dropped)

Directions: Blend all together in an earthenware crock and drop by a sterile tablespoon onto a greased cookie sheet. Bake in an oven until the cookie springs back when touched. (They don’t like to be handled or pawed.)

Notes: This cookie will stay soft! They don’t get hard as rocks but they do mold after about a week.

More Notes: Marion Hostetter sold these cookies at a Farmers Market in Elkhart Indiana for many years prior to her death.
